Well my net provider has been having some massive issues the past week, and therefore I have not been able to hold a steady connection for more than a few minutes. It seems to have finally stabilized, but it really impacted my surf time on Napalm. So if you posted a comment and I haven't replied, or I have not yet read your blog, now you know why.

I will be getting to it all asap.

At this very moment there are some annoying font sizing, and margin spacing issues across the site. I want to apologize for this. There is a gentleman working on some html/css restructuring, which had some unexpected side-effects. He is currently working on resolving them.

So hopefully things will be back to normal very soon.

I have been wanting to mention something, but have not found the time until now. Unfortunately I am extremely slammed all the time with stuff for Napalm, and therefore it causes me to sometimes be far more delayed with responses to things than normal. So if you have noted me, or emailed me about being on the team, or anything else which is not simply a quick response from me, please do not be offended that you have no yet heard back. I am getting to things as quickly as possible, but sometimes certain communications slip through the crack. So if it has been a while, do not hesitate to send me another note or email. Reminders are great for me.

I am a bit disappointed with the new X-Files trailer. It just doesn't have much oomph. And there is no high-def version on Apple.com meaning that FOX would not pay for it. That is scary because it gives some indication of faith in it. Maybe I am completely wrong and it will turn out to be wonderful.

I hope so.

We had too many problems with using Skype for the group chat. Many people had trouble getting in there, so we are moving to IRC.

Registered a channel on Freenode. Connection information follows:

Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: #napalmriot

If you are not familiar with IRC, it is quite easy to use. Simply get a client to connect to the server, and then join the Napalm Riot channel. Easy as that.

If you are running Windows I would suggest using mIRC. It is a quite easy one to use.


If there are enough people who cannot figure out how to get into the channel, we may offer a web-based IRC client here. I am hoping we don't need to do that however.

So yeah, we are still working on our chat implementation.

The team here happens to use Skype for all of our IM communications and such. Contrary to the belief by (so it seems) any and everyone who has not used Skype, people do actually use it for things other than voice.

Anyway, quite recently (about 20 minutes ago) I noticed that you can now setup (public) chat rooms, so just for the fun of it, I put one up for Napalm. The team is in there, etc. So feel free to drop by if you want.

So I am about to ask a serious question, and I want you to answer it honestly. Don't worry about hurt feelings or anything like that. Your feedback here is important.

What grinds your gears about Napalm Riot? What really annoys you about NR? Something we currently have which you don't like? Something you feel we should have, but don't? Lay it on me.

Just try to keep in mind the stuff we have already commented on in the past. If we have already said something is coming, no reason to bring it up again. Tell me what you feel is missing, wrong, or just plain 'ew'.

So six days ago I decided to quit smoking, and since it has sucked. I have removed probably one of the most enjoyable things from my life. That may sound a bit melo-dramatic, but when you spend almost every waking moment sitting at a desk working, the occasional smoke break is like heaven on earth!

I think it is worse because I did not quit for any of the generally accepted 'right' reasons. I'm not overly worried about my health (although been told I should be). I'm not trying to improve my life by shedding unwarranted vices. I'm not engaged to someone who really wants me to quit. I'm not under massive pressure from family and friends to quit.

No, I'm quiting simply because of the expense. Mainly because I'm sinking every bit of change I have in Napalm, which in itself is a good thing. Can't say I'm not dedicated, but the point is that for the most part, I don't want to quit! Which of course, makes the entire process 10x more annoying.

Thankfully I have held it together enough as to not completely freak out on anyone yet. Although I must admit I have been really close to snapping quite a few times.



So yeah, if you haven't already noticed, this blog entry is pretty much useless, except to allow me a rant. But hey, you don't have to read it, and venting can be healthy.

Back to working on the News system I go.

We have pushed out three small things.

1st. If you have been experiencing any problems with Blog posting taking far longer than it should, we think it is a notifications problem, and moeffju committed something we believe will help. We'll be watching to see how it goes (this post is kind of a test). If you try and have any problems, please let us know ASAP.

2nd. For subscribers I just added align= and title= attributes to the [ img ] tag. As you can see by the hot picture of Bryce Dallas Howard here *shivers in pleasure*. So yeah, check out the formatting guide for more information on those.

3rd. Added a link from the Blog entry form to the Formatting Guide for easy access.

I have been getting quite a few reports of an error which states something to the extent of "Cannot copy file to server" when trying to upload an image.

I have been trying to reproduce this but thus far have been unsuccessful. Therefore I need some feedback from anyone who has had the problem.

A few questions (please only respond if you have experienced the error):

1. Has trying again been successful?

2. What image type were you uploading (jpeg, bmp, gif, etc)?

3. What operating system were you using?

4. What area were you submitting to (screenshots, pictures, fan art)?

5. What source was the image from (game? which one? | camera? which one? | etc.)?


We need as much information as possible to track this down, so your assistance here is greatly appreciated.

I know that it has been a good amount of time since we have announced anything actually new, and considering most of you probably think we have just fallen off the end of the earth, or are completely slacking.

However, I am here to tell you that is not the case what-so-ever. We have beeb working quite hard on most likely the largest package of new features this team has ever rolled out at one time. I will be coming quite soon, and I expect that you will all be more than thrilled.

I am sure most of you have started noticing that on any page's where there is an ad, it will many times 'stick' when it gets to the ad for a second or two (or three), before it continues to load the page.

I know this is annoying, and we have tracked it down to one of our partner's ad servers. I have contacted them, and we are working on a solution. If it is not something that we can fix soon, I will most likely be pulling the partner's ad code completely until they can resolve it on their in.

I just wanted you to know that we are aware there is a problem, and working on it as fast as possible.

So I read this article over at Eurogamer about The Sims Online shutting down. Ok yeah, I knew that was coming. It was a joke and Will Wright should have sued them for screwing it up so bad.

Then I read that they are relaunching it in a different manner but calling it EA Land.

Hey, I just wanted to post a quick entry here to explain. I know a lot of your send me notes, and post stuff on the forum asking for questions. Sometimes I get back to you right away, and sometimes it takes days (if not longer).

First, I apologize for this. I am juggling a lot of stuff right now, all Napalm related, and sometimes it's very difficult to respond quickly.

Second, if you ask a detailed question, which merits a detailed response, I will usually wait on responding until I have the time and brain power to make sure I can respond with appropriate in-depth information. I really hate responding to a long post with a lot of information and questions with 'Sure!'. :)

Third, please just hang in there with me, I will get to you ASAP. If more than a few days as passed, and you feel like it, feel free to send me a reminder. Sometimes those help.

Umm yeah... back to this piece of code. :P

So yeah, the screenshots section is going to be locked overnight. I need to get some sleep and am not quite done. It should not be too long after I wake up.

Such great things are happening! We have such amazing things in development. The community is growing faster than we even expected (and we can expect quite a lot). We're getting closer and closer to moving into our beta period. Our team here is slowly gaining more and more extremely talented individuals, which just assists in moving forward all the previous even faster.

We just released the Games Library feature, with the Game Selector, along with an upgrade to a quite healthy number of game titles in the database. Upcoming we have the Character System, Community Contribution System, Groups, Achievement System (yes, along with badges), Guild Tools, and a whole lot more which we have not yet mentioned.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the community for their continuing interest, great ideas, and outright inspiration. It is the truly amazing response which you have given that keep reiterating how worth it all this work is.

Well it finally looks as if Unknown Worlds is working on Natural Selection 2. I have been waiting for far too long. :) If you are a FPS/Strat lover and not familiar with NS, then you have been greatly missing out. Natural Selection takes a multi player FPS and adds an RTS overlay with a commander. So at the beginning of a round someone takes up the commander seat and views the entire game on a flat down birds eye view. He/She can set way points for the other players, drop them health, ammo, etc. Also, he can drop turrets to help them hold corridors. This is of course assuming the team has obtained and held control of resource gathering locations, which allow the commander to do drops, upgrade weapons, unlock new weapons etc. It is a Half-Life mod, and they are now working on the Source version. Blizzard has always stood in my mind as the utmost of quality, when it came to the subject of trailers. The work and attention to detail which they put into a trailer is just amazing. I remember sitting at my desk almost a decade ago watching the first Warcraft III trailer with ӝien, feeling chills run down my body because it was so amazing.

This continued on with the rest of the Warcraft III trailers. The Diablo trailers were all amazing. The World of Warcraft trailers were amazing. And the Starcraft 2 trailers have all been amazing... until now...

I saw the Zerg Revealed trailer like a month ago on IGN. It was lower quality, but I could still tell that it did not remotely hold up to Blizzard's amazing track-record. I however thought that maybe when it was released in higher quality, I would change my mind.

It is now available in HD format from StarCraft2.com.

It looks like they are using something like the WoW engine for most of the "cinematic", and while Blizzard has always been amazing at keeping their dialog succinct and and not remotely touching the border of melo-dramatic, this does not hold exactly true with this one. The Queen of Blades is talking, and it just seems a little over-board for me. It goes on a little too long.

The gameplay footage is amazing as would be expected, but the cinematic parts have so much contrast to the negative side, that it downgrades the good.

My point is that taken as a whole, the trailer looks like they felt a need to put something out, but didn't have time to do it, so they told two people in the back room to throw something together and release it. This is not uncommon for a lot of studios, but extremely uncommon for Blizzard.

So are they stretched too thin, or just losing their focus on quality?
