The History Channel is a corporation who's legal obligation is to make profit for their shareholders.
The National Geographic is a non-profit society which was founded in 1888 by 33 explorers and scientists.
From wikipedia:
The NGS's historical mission is "to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge while promoting the conservation of the world's cultural, historical, and natural resources."[1] Its President and CEO since March 1998, John M. Fahey, Jr., says National Geographic's purpose is to inspire people to care about their planet. The Society is governed by a twenty-three member Board of Trustees composed of a group of distinguished educators, businesspeople, scientists, former governmental officials, and conservationists. The organization sponsors and funds scientific research and exploration. The Society publishes an official journal, National Geographic Magazine, and other magazines, books, school products, maps, other publications, web and film products in numerous languages and countries around the world. It also has an educational foundation that gives grants to education organizations and individuals to enhance geography education.[2] Its Committee for Research and Exploration has given grants for scientific research for most of the Society's history and has recently awarded its 9,000th grant for scientific research, conducted worldwide and often reported on by its media properties. Its various media properties reach about 360 million people around the world monthly.[3] National Geographic maintains a museum free for the public in its Washington, D.C. headquarters, and has helped to sponsor such popular traveling exhibits such as the "King Tut" exhibit featuring magnificent artifacts from the tomb of the young Egyptian Pharaoh, which toured in several American cities, ending its U.S. showing at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The Tut exhibit has now moved to London.
So my point is that the NG Channel is not just a money making effort. It is part of a much bigger non-profit project, which has an excellent track record.
When I sit down and watch it. It is one of the very few times I allow myself to take in knowledge and not question if it is being twisted, or modified.
Ok, that was a bit more than you were expecting I'm sure.
Yeah, ever so slightly, however the way I see it, The History channel is, just that, a channel based on History, period.
National Geographic is, just that, a channel based on Geography and Science of the earth and it's wonderful Nature element. History is sprinkled in, but it isn't the main focus.
Sitting down and wondering if it's being twisted or modified, well that's a legit concern, however my main interest between the channels listed, would be history, and as such, I enjoy the History channel.
Sure, and don't get me wrong. I LOVE The History Channel.
But, as an example...
When the History Channel does anything on Biblical stuff, or actually religious stuff in general, they are real careful about tip-toeing around stuff to not piss anyone off.
But if you watch religious stuff on National Geographic, the people they interview on there are like 'You people are idiots!'.
Now, completely irrelevant of whether I or you are religious or not, the point is that the majority of scientists are not religious, and think that the creation theory is bullshit.
If the person being interviewed thinks that something is bullshit about the subject I am watching, I want to know. I don't want it cut because some people might be offended.
Maybe it's a bad example overall. I just don't like feeling like I'm being shielded from things I might not like, when they are viable views and facts.
I think I'm rambling and far past making my point. haha.
I'd like the History Channel more if it didn't feel like all they talked about was World War II, so it's a toss-up between Discovery and National Geographic for me.
Though I don't have TV so it's not like it's that big of a deal either way.
--- "Jesus, trapped in a burning honkey-tonk, and the jukebox is downstairs. Somebody's gonna suffer for this."
I watch both Discovery and History channels most of the time. I like Discovery lately for The Deadliest Catch and Dirty Jobs, but I also like History Channel's Modern Marvels, Heavy Metal, etc.
--- So tell me what does freedom mean
If I'm not free to be as twisted as I want to be
I use to enjoy the History Channel, but too often now it's become entirely dedicated to Nostradamus, and Doomsday shows... It's ridiculous, the majority of the time I flip to the History Channel, I'm not getting history... Discovery is the same way, I don't care about the Deadliest Catch, or the Dirtiest Jobs... Wtf is Discovery's aim anyway? But props to them for Mythbusters.
Hmmm, I'd vote NGC, but really I don't like any of them. Mythbusters is good, but I think the real problem with these is they only really pander to certain interests (And don't forget the history channel running a series of documentaries on nazi germany made by a holocaust denier, by "accident") like explosions and whatever. The times I've watched I found them kind of low brow, without enough internationally produced documentaries. That said, they do make some exellent shows, but not enough to make me pay 100 bucks a month for the privelige, considering SBS broadcasts the best ones to me for free.

Discovery for sure. I like the programming on discovery much better. Than history and nat geo are tied, I love history's war stuff, but nat geo has some pretty cool specials. Never seen the Smithsonian channel, don't even get it.
--- Beware. The Internewt is real!
I'll have a loil, on the rocks.

that was horribly hard, but i picked Discovery. I generally watch History chan more, but there is some upbeat stuff on discovery that balances it out better for an "only channel on"

In a 'stuck on a desert island' situation it would be Discovery or NGC for me. Probably Discovery because yeah, they have a more balanced presentation.
It's true! 95% of the History channel's programming is on WWII. Every time I turn around, it's Germany this and Japan that. In my house -- and mine isn't the only one -- it's called the Hitler Channel.
