I cant argue WoW destroying anything, from relationships/lives to the industry itself.
I like to think everyone I meet online under a pseudonym is a male cop. That being said, I found the myth that only guys play is hugely wrong. One WoW guild I was in, Robot Chickens, had loads of women and because of that was mostly a respectful and fun guild. We did absorb a couple chicks that were just out of control and would get on vent just to cock tease and they altered the atmosphere for the wrong.
So.. guys playing chick toons are creepy is evidence that RPG is going to the dogs? Ok.
FYI, I been playing RPG for a long time. While there are glaring holes in my game history I have played most of the major titles over the years. Immediately before I started Guild Wars I played Baldur's Gate II and KOTOR.
Because of a conversation we were having elsewhere I actually installed and got going Second Life and made myself a nice female goth type character. So I guess by my own statement I am creepy.

What is more creepy about a guy role-playing a girl, than is, a guy role-playing an orc?
Our sexuality? That shouldn't matter with role-playing. If we were ourselves, we would not be playing. True role-players will rarely take issue with gender reversal/shifts. That's part of what makes role-playing appetizing. Becoming something you are not normally.
